My oldest son John, was a struggling learner. And while I feel certain you don’t want your child to join the Marines… it is who John-John is.
He knows who he is.
He is brave.
He is curious.
He is a world changer.
He is confident in the Jesus he knows and loves.
I wish I could tell you I did it on purpose. Looking back I fully believe it was the Holy Spirit that encouraged my husband and me not to focus on what John lacked, but all that we knew him to be. The world and its standards will always call. But I propose, John is the successful and competent man he is because of the words we instilled in him his entire life.
Yes, you can.
You are able.
You are whole.
You are well.
You are complete.
John’s favorite scripture is, “Here I am Lord, send me.” Isaiah 6:8. When he was only two years old they told us he was deaf. When he was five they told us he would not function as “normal.” We believed more in John and his Creator than we did the world. And so we spoke truth into him every day of his young life. We still do. He will go and serve. He will return safely to his wife, cat, and family. We know that God has made a way for him. We believe his struggles shaped him, but they never defined him.
I have made this set of “I am cards” from journal entries I had when John was just a boy. I am in awe of the work that God had before John and I even realized it was to be. Things no eye had seen. literally no ear had heard. I know that you might be scared with all that is before you with struggling learner. I pray these cards offer you hope in the future God has planned for you and your child.
I recommend printing these on card stock and cutting them in half.
